Despite the low 40 degree temperatures and winds of 20 mph or more, 15 Village Audubon members enjoyed a fine day of birding at the Stuttgart Airport this past Friday. With the aide of master
birders Bill Shepherd and Dan Scheiman we saw a number of birds not common to the Village. There were several large flocks of Lapland Longspurs and dozens of the seldom seen Smith's
Longspurs. We had good looks at Horned Larks, American Pipits and LeConte's Sparrows. A special highlight was a Short-eared owl that flushed from the high grass and then landed in plain
sight along a runway berm. There were numerous sightings of Northern Harriers.
Our next field trip will be February 17th. We will meet at the Balboa Beach at 8:00. Our goal is to survey the waterfowl on all of the Village lakes.
The following pictures of the group, Short-eared Owl, and Savannah Sparrow were taken by Brian Baldwin.
