Middle Fork Saline River Restoration from June 21, 2011
On Tuesday, June 21, ten of us ( Vic Prislipsky, Peggy Myles, Kay Creighton, Clint Sowards, Maury and Barbara Baker, Teri LaBove and her two grandsons, and Carolyn Minson) met Joy DeClerk of The Nature Conservancy on the section of the Middle Fork where they have been doing stream bank restoration. This section of the river is just a short distance upstream of where we cross the river after going out the Cortez Gate. We walked the section of the river where the work was done as Joy explained how the restoration work fared through the May 10 inch plus storm event. Most of the structure worked as it should have and completely prevented erosion, but two sections did erode. She then explained the lessons she has learned from the project and the plans for restoring those sections that did suffer damage.

An undamaged section of the restored area.

A bank that suffered major erosion from the May 10, 2011 storm.
Joy said that they would be doing the planned work sometime in late July or early August and said that she would let me know the planned worked dates. While the weather will be hot, the work is easier to do when the river is very low. I hope to be able to go out and watch for a short time and will let everyone know what the schedule is for the work.
Beaver Dam Trail from June 17, 2011
Vic Prislipsky lead a walk at Beaver Dam Trail on Friday, June 17. The following members participated in the walk: Betsy and Tom Warren, Laurel Gunderson, Nancy Holder, Sherri Craig, and Clint Sowards.
There were many singing birds but few wanted to be seen on this beautiful sunny morning. Those sighted included: eastern phoebe, northern cardinal, blue jay, black vulture, turkey vulture, brown-headed cowbird, mallard duck, american crow, great blue heron and green heron. The great blue gave us a particularly good look when it perched on a limb over the water. Heard but not seen were: common yellowthroat, carolina wren, red-bellied woodpecker, tufted titmouse, carolina chickadee and white-eyed vireo.
