April Program

Stamps:
More than just another pretty feather.

Dr. Dan "the Birdman" Scheiman is our guest speaker for April, with a program entitled "Ornithology Through Philately".

There are over 37,000 postage stamps that illustrate over 3,500 species. These stamps also display birds’ breeding habits and habitats, threats and conservation, and the ornithologists who studied them.

Dr. Dan the Bird Man will talk about what stamps featuring birds can teach us about ornithology. There’s more to be gained from collecting stamps than face value.

Dr. Dan Scheiman is Bird Conservation Director for Audubon Arkansas, a state office of the National Audubon Society, based at the Little Rock Audubon Center. He has a B.S. from Cornell University, M.S. from Eastern Illinois University, and Ph.D. from Purdue University.

Dan and his coworkers monitor birds, restore wildlife habitat, and help Arkansans improve their local environments.

He has been birding for over 25 years. Since moving to Arkansas in 2005 to work for Audubon he has seen 360 of the 419 bird species documented in the state.
