Bird Call to Action: Tell the Arkansas State Plant Board to Further Restrict Dicamba Use
The following is submitted for your consideration. Let your voice be heard! Audubon Arkansas wants to hear from you - submit your comments by November 26.
- Norma Wall, President, HSV Audubon
There is a real chance that the original April 16 cutoff (an effective ban) could be reinstated at the Dec. 11 public hearing. A groundswell of public comments will bouy that effort by helping to sway Board members who are on the fence.
Audubon is the only conservation organization in AR that has spoken up. Those in the agricultural sector whose livelihoods are impacted by dicamba have expressed appreciation for us. Let's continue to show our support, speak up for the birds, and stand against the big herbicide manufacturers that put profit over sustainable agriculture.
Dan Scheiman, Ph.D., Bird Conservation Director, Audubon Arkansas
SUMMARY:
The Arkansas State Plant Board's latest proposed rule still allows dicamba spraying through May 25.
Audubon Arkansas is against spraying dicamba over the top of crops during warm weather. As the weather warms, this herbicide's volatility increases, meaning even days later it can kill nearby native plants, which in turn harms birds and pollinators.
Audubon Arkansas and our community scientists have documented harmful effects on nearby trees and other native plants!
Audubon Arkansas is advocating for an early cutoff date and a temperature restriction. A 30-day comment period is now open through Nov. 30.
Please submit your comments! Audubon Arkansas is collecting comments through Nov. 26 to submit to the Plant Board.
