Native Plant Week April 17-23

Plants for Birds

A proclamation making the week of April 17-23, 2022 “Native Plant Week in Hot Springs Village” was signed by POA Board Chairperson, JoAnn Corry and accepted by Norma Wall on behalf of HSV Audubon. The timing is not accidental, as April 22 is Earth Day.

Native Plant Week recognizes the importance of native plants in bird-friendly communities. Planting bird- and butterfly-friendly plant species offer year-round food, cover and shelter, and give birds the best chance of survival.

Arkansas’s native plants conserve water, save energy, and reduce pollutants and pesticides. Plants from other areas may not be a good sources of food for our wildlife, and may require more chemicals and water to thrive, increasing maintenance time, costs and environmental hazards. Some can even become invasive.

Birds visit our yards looking for nourishment and places to raise their chicks. Native plants are food for our native insects, which are in turn food for birds. More than 96% of all land birds feed their young insects, and native plants provide the environment they need.

HSV Audubon and POA Parks and Recreation have planned speakers and events for the weeks surrounding Native Plant Week. Visit hsvbirds.org for details and a list of the top bird friendly plants for the Village.

Plants for birds is a program of the National Audubon Society. HSV Audubon encourages you to add bird-friendly native plants to your landscape and gardens.
