Millions of Monarchs

We had a busy meeting on February 13. Special thanks to Dr. Jim Edson for his program telling us all about the 2000 mile migration of 200-300 million monarch butterflies to Mexico.

C4K - Computer for Kids Recycle

Bring your unwanted computers (working or not) to our March 12 or April 9 meeting to for donation to our local Computers for Kids C4K program. C4K rebuilds computers (laptops also) and donates them to local children and occasionally, needy families.

* When you donate a computer, the hard drive is thoroughly 'wiped' - no data is left.
* C4K will install licensed programs to current standards.
* If a computer is defective, the drive is wiped, and equipment used for parts.
* If a computer is unusable, the drive is wiped, and the computer is taken to the Hot Springs Electronics recycling center.

* You can bring computers to the March/April meetings.

* Karen Geiger will transport to C4K.

Carolyn Minson shows how to make Zen Curtains using parachute cord.

How to Make Zen Curtains

1. Measure the size of the window glass.
2. Select top mount material and cut to size.
3. Determine the number and spacing of holes for cords. Cords should be 4” apart.

For windows with screens, the cord only needs to cover the unscreened section. For windows with no screen, the cords can either be cut a few inches short or weighted or otherwise secured at the bottom. (I recommend cutting short so that the cords can move more easily with a breeze.)

4. Drill holes (3/16” drill bit) for cords and for hanging wires.
5. Cut dark colored 1/8” parachute cord about 5 to 6 inches longer than height of window.
6. Seal one end of cords with candle or fireplace lighter. Push through hole from the front and tie knot on back. Use glue to seal if desired.
7. Cut two 5” pieces of picture hanging or other wire and make hangers on each end.
8. Determine position of cup hooks above window and install.
9. Install the Bird Saver and allow to hang for a couple of weeks.
10. Cut the bottom ends of the parachute cord to desired length. Then pull the white inner core yarns out and cut off. Seal the ends with flame.
11. Enjoy the feeling of knowing you have done the best that you possibly can to protect the birds from killing or injuring themselves on your windows.
